about

This song is very loosely based and inspired from The Mennonite community who settled my home town of Kitchener-Waterloo. A few years ago, they dug up our main street and discovered a Corduroy Road and the history of it captivated our small city and helped me write this song. I hope you enjoy it.

lyrics

The Corduroy Road

We had our homes and fields many miles from the cities
To avoid that kind of life
See people come and go but they always seemed so gritty
Tip my hat as they go by

We never had a need for the city
Built our barns, a community strong
Our children played all day in the country
Dinner on the table and nights with song

It was a warm July when my blood went cold and chilly
I knew that something wasn't right
Smelled the fires burn heard the cries come from the city
The soldiers marched thru fields nearby

They made their way up the lane after midday
Said our farmland belonged to the King
They told my wife that I'd have to go fighting
If I didn't join them then I'd be hung

So many men like me would ride right thru the darkness
To get our families to the sea
To live a life of peace in a world that's cold and heartless
It's hard to hold to your belief

We had to steal away after midnight
Won't take them long to notice we've gone
Don't want my wife and child to see violence
When you don't feel much like fighting you just run

Down the Corduroy Road just a wooden highway
Carry the load leave the Old World behind me
The Corduroy Road don't ever tread it lightly
Build a new home hope they never ever find me

So many months go by but we finally step on dry land
No idea which way to go
We follow endless sky to build a new life with our bare hands
The terrain ahead is hard and slow

I have some family that came here before me
Wrote them letters and told them we'd come
They said they settled outside of the cities
And the land they had stretched to the setting sun

Down the Corduroy Road just a wooden highway
Carry the load leave the Old World behind me
The Corduroy Road don't ever tread it lightly
Build a new home hope they never ever find me

Down the Corduroy Road just a wooden highway
Carry the load leave the Old World behind me
The Corduroy Road don't ever tread it lightly
Build a new home hope they never ever find me
